Country: Brazil

Prediction: Semi-Finals

Result: Quarter-Finals (Brazil 1(2) - 1(4) Croatia)

Comment: Heartbreak for Neymar. The Brazilians would have been happy to face Croatia, until they actually played Croatia. The Europeans showed immense grit to equalize, and once it went to penalties, you always knew Brazil were within a hair’s width of exiting. No one can deny this quarter-final exit hurts more than 2018’s loss, and, considering the wealth of talent Brazil had at their disposal, 2022 will go down as an underperformance for the Selecao.

 

Country: Argentina

Prediction: Finals (Winners)

Result: Winners

Comment: Yeah, we got this right then didn’t we, and who would’ve thought after that opening loss against Saudi Arabia. Lionel Messi finally completed football, and no one can say he didn’t deserve it.

 

Country: Spain

Prediction: Semi-Finals

Result: Round of 16 (Spain 0(0) – 0(3) Morocco)

Comment: When Spain beat Costa Rica 7-0, we all really thought they could go all the way, huh? Then we got probably the second most-boring Round of 16 game in the last eight years (only challenged by Spain’s loss to Russia in 2018), followed by three of the worst penalties you’ll ever see. See ya next time, La Roja, hopefully you’ll have a better time of it in 2026!

 

Country: France

Prediction: Finals

Result: Runners-Up (France 3(2) – 3(4) Argentina)

Comment: You gotta feel for Kylian Mbappe. The 23-year old was magnificent all tournament long, winning the Golden Boot, and perfect to a fault in the final, only to lose on penalties. But, eh, that’s football, and considering France’s young squad, we bet on Mbappe coming back in 2026 to lift a second World Title. Credit must go to Didier Deschamps, who had to deal with countless injuries and an illness outbreak right before the final. What’s left to be seen is where French football goes without him in the future.

 

Country: England

Prediction: Quarter-Finals

Result: Quarter-Finals (England 1-2 France)

Comment: If you could have chosen one player on the field that day to take that penalty, you would’ve picked Harry Kane. Unfortunately, the England skipper skied it, and somehow, England went out to a penalty even in regulation time. The true fault lies with Gareth Southgate, however: the decision to take off Bukayo Saka was terrible, and it’s unfathomable why Jack Grealish wasn’t brought on earlier. The Three Lions have been contenders for several years now, but with Southgate at the helm, we’re not sure if they can put up a challenge in 2026.

 

Country: Germany

Prediction: Quarter-Finals

Result: Group Stage (Third Place)

Comment: Hahahahahaha (sad tears).

  BARCELONA’S 21/22 SEASON: A SEASON OF TWO HALVES - Mitansh Kagalwala FC Barcelona’s 21/22 season was supposed to start on a promising note. New signings Sergio Aguero, Memphis Depay and Eric Garcia had all joined on free transfers, and thus, despite Barca’s heavy financial problems, the squad looked in overall better shape. The promised return of Ansu Fati, the rise of youngsters Gavi, Nico and Pedri, and the upturn in form towards the second half of the previous season all pointed to a resurgence. This was going to be Barca's season of comeback. And, of course, Barca still had Leo Messi. What more did they need? Then, on August 5 th , 2021, president Joan Laporta announced that, for the first time in his glittering career, Lionel Messi would don a jersey other than the claret-and-blue. Yannick Carrasco gave Atleti the lead with a superb shot past Ter Stegen, before Alba equalized just moments later with a ridiculous volley from the edge of the box. Excellent work from new signing Adama Traore down the wing allowed Gavi to head Barca into the lead, before Araujo and Dani Alves volleyed in for Barca either side of half time. In the second half though, Atleti piled on the pressure, resulting in Luis Suarez pulling a goal back for the Los Rojiblancos on his return to Barca territory, before Dani Alves was sent off, reducing Barca to 10-men. Barca held out, however, meaning they leapfrog the Madrid side into a Champions League spot.
