Ratings from Real Madrid’s legendary comeback against PSG.
Class is
permanent, and form is temporary. Real Madrid proved on a Wednesday Champions
League night at the Bernabau, that they are experienced, motivated, confident
and here to stay. Despite a recent dip in the Los Blancos’ form, they still stole
a win from the jaws of defeat against PSG on Wednesday. A solid and energetic
performance by the French team was undone by a 17-minute second half blitz from
star player and veteran Karim Benzema sealing a legendary comeback and win for
Ancelloti’s men.
Here's what we made of the Madrid side:
Thibaut
Courtois (7.5/10):
Courtois was successful in saving important shots on goal from Mbappe in the
first half. He played an important role in ending a few dangerous PSG counter
attacks, but will be disappointed that he was beaten at his near post for the
opener.
Daniel
Carvajal (5.5/10):
The Spaniard didn’t play an effective defensive role, giving time and space to
the fast Kylian Mbappe. However, he did seem more insistent in starting a few
attacks and playing an offensive game. However, Ancelotti’s tactics meant that
Carvajal left a lot of space behind for Nuno Mendes to run into when he marked
Mbappe, increasing his troubles.
Eder
Militao (7/10):
Militao made some excellent interceptions. He was highly involved in the
defense and gave Mbappe a strong challenge.
David
Alaba (7/10): Alaba
was confident in his duties at the heart of the defense. Alongside Militao, he
made important interceptions and even prevented a goal scoring opportunity in
the second half.
Nacho
(6.5/10): The Real
Madrid number 6 wasn’t as active through the game, considering most of the
match was played on the opposite flank. From the few attacks made down his side
from Hakimi, he did a good job in dealing with them.
Toni
Kroos (7/10): The
German’s first half was positive and he played well in defense and even made a
few good passes. However, not much was seen of him before he was substituted
for a pair of fresh legs.
Luka
Modric (9/10): The
Croatian has a golden legacy at Madrid. Luka Modric put up a performance that
will be remembered. His play was key in the second goal and his interception
and attack in that moment was phenomenal. A true indication of why the Croatian
is one of the best midfielders to ever grace the game.
Fede
Valverde (7.5/10):
Valverde defended well and found good momentum as the game progressed. He held
the midfield defensively, and provided much-needed balance to the middle of the
park.
Marco
Asensio (5/10):
Asensio wasn’t having an impact on the game. With some loose touches and
finishing, it wasn’t the Spaniards night. His failure to track back also afforded
Nuno Mendes and Kylian Mbappe time and space on Real’s right flank.
Karim
Benzema (9/10): The
veteran Frenchman clearly showed Kylian Mbappe who the real boss is. He played
a part in all 3 of the goal-scoring chances, and showed excellent clinical
instincts to take them. With an excellent display, the Frenchman passed Raul to
go 2nd in Real Madrid’s list of all time UCL scorers. (MOTM)
Vinicius
Jr. (8/10): The
Brazilian made a lot of attempts in the first half but they fell short. He had
a couple of successful dribbles and was involved in the goals, and even bagged
an assist.
Substitutions:
Rodrygo
(7/10): Rodrygo had
a positive impact on the game and attacked well to put PSG on the backfoot.
Lucas
Vazquez (7/10):
Vazquez managed to keep Mbappe at bay and had a good defensive performance.
Camavinga (7/10): Camavinga had a set of fresh legs coming in for Toni Kroos, having a good offensive performance, and kept Real in the game.
