Carlo Ancelotti’s Real
Madrid faced PSG in the Round Of 16 in the UCL in a blockbuster clash at the Parc Des Princes. Carlo Ancelotti set up the men in white to play for a draw; to contain the dangerous Parisiens. Los Blancos almost succeeded, but a late winner from the dangerous Kylian Mbappe gave PSG the lead going into the second leg. The majority of the game was played in Madrid’s defensive half, where a number of blue shirts tried time and time again to convert, only to be denied by a brilliant Thibaut Courtois. Ancelotti’s men
played a contained game with barely any bright moments, and an overall passive
tone to their play.
PLAYER RATINGS:
Thibaut Cortouis (9/10): If not for the Belgian, Madrid would’ve conceded several more goals. Cortouis was outstanding throughout the game making a few fine saves and then stopping a Lionel Messi penalty. He was Madrid’s best performer for the night.
Daniel Carvajal
(5/10): The Spaniard had a difficult time in the game, who had a difficult time against a fast and energetic Kylian Mbappe.
Eder Militiao
(7.5/10): Militao made quite a few interceptions and was solid throughout the game. He did however, pick up a
yellow card.
David Alaba (7/10): Alaba was key in nipping a few PSG attacks in the bud, and was put under pressure by the relentless PSG attack throughout.
Ferland Mendy (6/10):
Mendy did not face as many 1v1s down his side, as a lot of the game was being
played down the other side. However, he did seem shaky when pressed.
Casemiro (6.5/10): The
Brazilian made some key tackles and interceptions, but also picked up his customary yellow card, which arguably should have been a red.
Luka Modric (6/10):
The Madrid veteran performed well in defense but didn’t have that bright of a
passing and attacking game, like he usually does.
Toni Kroos (6/10): The
German Sniper almost landed a long shot on target in what would’ve been a
beautiful goal. Otherwise, he didn’t have much of attacking play
to be involved in.
Marco Asensio (5.5/10):
Asensio wasn’t really seen in the game for the most part. He didn’t prove much
with the ball.
Vinicius Jr. (5.5/10):
The Brazilian had an absolutely contrary game to how he usually plays. He
wasn’t seen and when he got the ball, rarely, he tried an attack which didn’t
succeed. A victim of the tactics as much as his own performance.
Karim Benzema
(5.5/10): Benzema was clearly struggling with his injury and was unfit. There
wasn’t much he could provide, and was plagued by a lack of service.
Substitutes:
Lucas Vazquez (5/10):
Coming on in the 71st minute as a substitute for Carvajal, he too wasn't at par with Mbappe.
Rodrygo (5/10): Came
on for Asensio in the 71st minute but did not have much impact.
Other Substitutions:
Eden Hazard, Fede Valverde, Gareth Bale.
