TALKING POINTS

Spurs ended Man City’s 15-game unbeaten run in a thrilling
contest at the Etihad on Saturday that finished 3-2 to the Lilywhites, courtesy
of a late Harry Kane winner. City had a majority of the possession (over 2/3rd),
but were pegged back again and again by the brilliant Kane and Heung Min Son on
the counter attack, in what is a surprise triumph for the North Londoners. City
had 21 shots, but managed to get only 4 on target, in an unusually wasteful
game for the Sky Blues. Here’s what we made of it:
1.
City’s Kryptonite: Spurs have
seemingly become the antithesis to Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City. No matter
how badly they may be playing, or how well the Cityzens might be performing,
the Lilywhites almost always seem to fight their way to three points against
the Sky Blues. Key to that is City’s Kryptonite, Heung Min Son, who had another
brilliant night, troubling Dias and Walker to no end, and setting up the opener
with a cool head.
2.
Kane and Son, Son and Kane: Last
season’s deadly duo are seemingly back, as the two orchestrated Spurs’ win
against the leaders. Kane played a brilliant ball to send Son through for the
first, and then scored twice himself. The Englishman looked finally back to his
best in front of what might end up being his own fans next season. However, Son
and Kane coming back into their own could not have come at a better time for
Antonio Conte’s side, who will now look to mount an assault on the top 4.
3.
Title Race Thrown Wide Open: A few
weeks back, it seemed like Man City had already won the title. Now, however,
the Spurs have blown open the title race. On a night where challengers Liverpool
came from behind to beat Norwich, City lost at home to Spurs. City’s lead now
stands at just 6 points, and Liverpool have a game in hand. The title race is
heating up again, and we cannot wait.
4.
Silver Lining: On a night where most
of City’s highly-acclaimed stars failed to deliver, two still stood out. Joao
Cancelo was great again, continuing his excellent season, and once again cementing
his place among Europe’s elite full backs. Ilkay Gundogan showed glimpses of
his last season self, poaching a sharp rebound goal, and hitting the post from
an excellent strike from range. Small positives from a largely disappointing night
for Pep Guardiola.
